I have decided to share my artwork on paper with you as well. This is the first in a series that I want to update regularly. They are all collage works made with paper or at least works on paper. Drawing is often the basis of their creation process. When I draw, I use simple, often found materials such as felt-tip pens, pencils, coloured pencils, ballpoint pens, basically anything that is available.
Sometimes I scan drawings I have made to make prints of them later and then continue drawing on them. I also sometimes chop or cut out interesting parts that I then stick somewhere else so that a collage is created. The sizes of the works are usually small and handy, varying from 30 to about 50 centimeters. Since I like to work standing at a table, the collages have to fit on my work surface. These works have not been shown before and therefore never exhibited.
When I decided to look at my works on paper differently a few years ago, I gained a new insight. These works are often much smaller in size and can be made more quickly. Previously I tended to only consider a work good enough if I had worked on it for a longer period of time. I was striving for a kind of well-considered and verifiable perfection. Thus, the small works that initially seemed insignificant but on closer inspection turned out to be surprising sometimes remained unused and unseen. Making collages of and on paper offers many spontaneous possibilities. You can add parts of a drawing, scan and print. Working in this way is very direct and diverse, impulsive and also rather intuitive. Because you can more easily try out previously untried experiments, a lively freedom comes into your work. It also enables you to apply these qualities in the larger works.

This work is also about my current favorite subject and belongs to the series: La Fête Galante. Mezzetino plays or tunes his guitar while in the background Marie-Anne de Cupis de Camargo dances. La Camargo was a famous French ballet dancer. She was responsible for interesting innovations in ballet. For example, she was one of the first to wear flat shoes instead of heels. She is also said to be as strong as male dancers.
